Buying a used EV: how to check battery health first

On a used EV, the odometer tells you much less than it does on a gas car: battery health, or State of Health (SoH), is the number that actually predicts remaining range and resale value. Telematics company Geotab's 2026 analysis of over 22,700 EVs found average degradation of about 2.3% capacity loss per year, but heavy fast-charging roughly doubled that rate. Always ask for the actual SoH reading rather than trusting mileage alone, and confirm in writing whether the battery warranty transfers to you as a second owner.

A used EV's odometer reading tells you far less than it would on a gas car: battery health, measured as State of Health (SoH), is what actually predicts remaining range and future cost. According to telematics company Geotab's 2026 analysis of real-world data from more than 22,700 EVs across 21 makes and models, average battery degradation runs around 2.3% of capacity lost per year, which would put a typical eight-year-old EV at roughly 81.6% SoH. But that average hides big swings driven by how the car was actually charged and used, so it's a starting point, not a guarantee for the specific car in front of you. Before you buy, get the real SoH number, not just the range shown on the dashboard, and check whether the battery warranty follows the car to you.

Why this matters more than it does on a combustion car

On a gas car, mileage is a reasonable proxy for overall wear: an engine driven gently for 150,000 km is usually in better shape than one thrashed for 80,000. EV batteries don't follow the same curve. Two cars with an identical odometer reading can have meaningfully different battery health depending on charging habits, climate, and how often the battery sat at very high or very low charge. That means the single most useful number for a used EV, SoH, often isn't on the window sticker, and sellers rarely volunteer it unprompted. You have to ask for it specifically.

1. What "State of Health" (SoH) actually means

SoH expresses a battery's current maximum usable capacity as a percentage of its capacity when new. A battery at 100% SoH holds essentially all of its original range; one at 85% SoH has lost about 15% of its original usable capacity, which shows up as a lower maximum range even when fully charged. It's a different measurement from the state-of-charge percentage you see on the dashboard day to day (which just shows how full the battery currently is). SoH is about the ceiling, not the current fill level.

2. How much do EV batteries actually lose, and what drives it

Treat degradation figures as an industry-level pattern rather than a guarantee for any single car: real-world usage varies too much for a single number to apply exactly. With that caveat, Geotab's 2026 fleet analysis is one of the larger real-world datasets available, and it breaks the picture down by usage pattern rather than giving one flat number:

At the fleet-average rate, Geotab projects an average SoH of about 81.6% at the eight-year mark. This is exactly why you check the actual number on the car you're considering instead of assuming an average applies.

3. How to check SoH before you buy

There's no single universal tool (what's available depends on the brand), but the options generally fall into three tiers, roughly in order of how much access and cost they require:

A real-world range test is a useful sanity check too: note the charge percentage before and after a known distance and compare the implied range to what the car should deliver near-new, but treat it as a rough confirmation rather than a substitute for an actual SoH reading, since driving style, speed, and temperature all swing the result (Recharged, "How to Check EV Battery Health in a Used EV," consulted 2026-08-10). If a seller can't or won't help you get any SoH reading at all, treat that as a reason to get an independent inspection before you commit: not necessarily a reason to walk away, but a gap you shouldn't skip over.

4. Battery warranty: what's typically covered, and does it transfer to you?

Warranty terms vary by manufacturer and by country, so don't assume a specific number applies to the car you're looking at. But a few patterns are common enough to be useful starting points. Many manufacturers offer a battery warranty around eight years, often paired with a distance limit, and a capacity floor guarantee (commonly around 70% of original capacity) below which a defective-battery claim can apply. Transferability is the part buyers skip most often. Battery warranties are frequently transferable to a second owner, but that's not automatic in every case: some manufacturers require paperwork or an account update to formally move coverage, and some promotional extensions apply only to the original owner and disappear on resale. The warranty clock also typically starts from the car's original in-service date, not the model year, so a "2023 model" first registered in early 2024 has its warranty clock running from 2024. Before you buy:

  1. Ask the seller or dealer for the manufacturer's written battery warranty terms for that specific VIN.
  2. Confirm explicitly whether it transfers to a second owner, and whether any paperwork is required to keep it active.
  3. Check how much of the original term and distance allowance is actually left: a warranty that "sounds long" may have little runway remaining on a five-year-old car.
  4. Ask whether there's a record of any prior battery-related warranty claims or replacements.

5. Other things to check during the viewing

A few practical checks round out the SoH number:

  • Charging speed on a fast charger: if the car accepts DC fast charging noticeably slower than its spec allows, that can point to a battery or thermal-management issue worth investigating further.
  • Dashboard warning lights: any persistent battery, charging-system, or check-engine-equivalent warning is worth a professional look before you commit, not after.
  • Battery cooling system: ask whether the car uses active liquid cooling or a simpler passive system. Actively cooled batteries generally tolerate fast charging and heat better over time, which is useful context when comparing two different models.
  • Service history for battery-related work: any documented battery module replacement or repair should come with paperwork explaining what was done and why.

None of these checks alone is conclusive. Together with an actual SoH reading, they give you a realistic picture of what you're buying instead of relying on a dashboard range estimate that may already reflect the seller's optimistic driving style.
